ESSAY

As I conclude my undergraduate degree, I find that my art has shifted between communication and representing environments. The subject of environment ranging from where we live, to people around us, and even the environment created inside our own mind. I love this idea and that these places can impress a lasting affect on us. Whether we are aware of it or not the places we go and the people we meet change us.

I began with focusing on buildings and the basic structure of a place. I found myself taking places I have been and immortalizing them on the page. It was like I was paying homage to these places. Whether they were where I have been many times before, or only for a few moments and may very well never see again. The artists, Jo So Hoo and Mateusz Urbanowicz, have done similar work considering buildings and what you consider to be home. I want to draw inspiration from that idea and I hope to explore this exchange of environment a little further.

As my work has progressed, it has included people and the exploration of communication and memories. In relation to my own mind and mental health issues, I have been trying to explore communication and they way humans interact with each other and theirselves. In the series, "Anatomy of the Subconscious," I wanted to depict people in this state of communication between others (or lack of) and between themselves. I also show a split personality in some of them, which represents my bipolar mind which is something I struggle with.

With these ideas in mind, I hope to continue to expand and explore upon new mediums and ideas for future projects. Overall, this coming year I hope to continue my study communications between myself and others, and understanding my work process more. I want my focus to be on this idea of double views, shifting realities and moods as well as personal environments.
